Unique Holiday Destinations in the Western Cape

These days, it tends to feel as though everyone has seen and done almost everything and there are no longer any unique holiday destinations left in the world. Of course, the world does not have access to one of the most beautiful areas in the globe – the Western Cape. South Africans know the area well, but even they may not have known that there are unique hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered by those on the lookout for their next holiday destinations.

So, once you have decided that this type of holiday is for you, how do you find what is unique? Sure, you can head over to Table Mountain or to one of the beaches for the seaside holiday, but that is not exactly hidden or different from what so many families have done before, is it? It can take a little patience and a trained eye to see the things that you wouldn’t ordinarily see the first time round.

Here’s a Unique Idea for You

If you have the time to visit the Kagga Kamma Game Reserve, you will be exposed to more things than your eyes can see or your brain can even process. This is an area that is steeped in history, both cultural and natural, and every day those who visit the area learn something new, something only unique holiday destinations such as this could have taught them.

One of the most unique facets of the area has to be the Cederberg Mountains themselves, which generally struggle to steal the limelight away from their much larger counterpart. However, there is so much unexpected flora and fauna to be found on this mountain that you could be forgiven for thinking you had gone to another planet.

The Reserve is One of Those Unique Holiday Destinations

The actual Kagga Kamma Reserve itself is a myriad of one-of-a-kind flora and fauna, the kind you could not possibly see anywhere else. As South Africans, we are lucky to have a number of landmarks such as this, and what makes them most interesting and unique, is that they are often both wondrous in natural terms, and culturally historic terms too.

If you take the reserve as an example, you will see some of the most incredible and elusive animals you are ever likely to see, such as the black backed jackal and the striped polecat. However, just metres from where you are likely to spot one of these creatures, you will also find rock art left by the Bushmen that is a direct link to the country’s history. This is certainly something you won’t find in many other places in the world.

What to Do When You Get There

Finding a unique holiday destination is sometimes not about the location, but about what you will do when you get there. This one is no different, and caters for the whole family or for the lone individual. So what kinds of unique undertakings can you engage in? Well, if you want to get out and see the sites, you could do it in a safari vehicle, but in this area, walking is sometimes an experience as unique as flying would be.

When you walk, you have a unique vantage point that allows you to see some of the species that would flee if they heard the sound of a vehicle. The Namaqua sand grouse for example, would not shriek its very unique cry if you made a lot of noise and so walking may be one of the only ways to take in its song.

What More Do You Need to Know?

How about the reserve’s mini-observatory that allows you to enjoy your holiday in the dark? You, your partner and your kids can spend some time under a telescope staring at the stars and trying to discover what could be hidden in our huge universe. A guide can take you through all of the constellations and so, while exploring and adventuring, you would have the chance to learn too.

When it comes to unique holiday destinations and different things to do, this is one that allows you to turn your holiday completely on its head, and take some time out from your normal day-to-day- activity to really enjoy the hidden treasures of the area.
